Apple's first foldable phone went on sale on October 23. By the next day, owners in several countries were posting photos of inner screens cracked straight down the hinge. That is the first of six stories this week.
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable. Owners say the inner display cracks along the fold, sometimes within hours, and some describe a stiff hinge or a crunching sound first. On October 26, Apple said a small number of units are affected and told owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement. AppleCare+ is not required.
iFixit's teardown points at the hinge. A central support bar may not lower as the phone closes, or curved guide rails may rise into the screen. iFixit says these are possible causes, not a confirmed diagnosis. A folding screen bends every time you open the phone, so the hinge has to keep every part clear of the glass. That is a tolerance problem, the kind mechanical design courses warn about.

On October 26, Anthropic, the company that makes Claude, filed an S-1. That is the public paperwork a company submits before an IPO, the first time it sells shares to ordinary investors. It plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT.
The filing shows $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026, alongside an $80.7 billion net loss. The loss looks alarming, but $72.4 billion of it came from accounting changes in the value of convertible notes and similar instruments as the company's valuation rose. Anthropic also reported its first quarterly operating profit, $974 million, in the second quarter. The share count and price are not set yet. Reuters reported a likely valuation near $1.5 trillion, and Bloomberg said marketing could begin the week of November 9.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26. Its main skill is "computer use": it looks at a screen, opens apps and fills in forms for you. API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Tokens are the chunks of text a model reads and writes, roughly a word or part of one.
OpenAI says that price is 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and that Terra finishes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Those are OpenAI's own figures. If you build projects on AI APIs, lower prices stretch a small budget further.

Curious how people get good results out of models like this? SabiLearn's Prompt Engineering Essentials is free and needs no coding, so you can try it at your own pace.
On October 29, the French AI company Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed "Le Chonk." Weights are the numbers a model learns during training, and parameters are a count of them. Large 4 has one trillion. Releasing the weights makes it an "open-weight" model, which means anyone can download it, run it on their own machines and modify it.
Mistral says Large 4 is the best open-weight model for coding. It also says the model narrowly tops other open models on Artificial Analysis's Coding Agent Index and uses 47% fewer tokens per task than GLM-5.3, a leading open model from China. Those are Mistral's claims. The license is a modified MIT license that allows use, modification, fine-tuning and commercial use. Companies that sell the model as a service need a separate license.
There are two catches. Mistral itself warned that the model could help attackers carry out real cyberattacks, and later safety updates will apply to its own API, not to copies people have already downloaded. Running a model this size also takes serious GPU hardware, so most developers will reach it through Mistral's API, OpenRouter or Microsoft Foundry instead.

On October 28, Apple announced an OLED MacBook Pro with a touch display, starting at $2,899. It brings Dynamic Island to the Mac for the first time. OLED screens light each pixel individually, so black areas are truly dark. macOS now supports swiping and pinching, and developers can add touch support to their apps. Apple also announced an M6 iMac and an OLED iPad mini.

From November 16, each Discoverable Server, meaning a public community with 1,000 or more members, gets its own public web page. From mid-December, messages in public channels may appear in search results, without usernames or avatars. Only messages sent after the rollout are included. Admins choose which channels take part, and members can opt out. If you are in big public coding or gaming servers, check your settings before December.
